We were gone from the morning of the 19th till the evening of the 23rd of July. We went with our fave coach company, National Holidays. It's reasonably priced and we always have a really good time! We visted Tralee, Killarney, The Ring of Kerry and The Dingle Peninsula. It is soooo beautiful over there but it is beautiful in the UK too, just as green here as in Ireland but to me there is something SPECIAL about Ireland. We were blessed again with good weather most of the time, just as we were on our Ireland holiday in 2007. It did rain off and on but we were able to enjoy the places we really wanted to see. We went on this same coach holiday to SW Ireland in 2007, but that was okay. We love that area but we do want to see more of Ireland. I would move there now! The people are friendly and to me it's just a magical place. I took Ken out the night of his birthday. We got a taxi to pick us up at the hotel and went to a seafood restaurant we had found on the Internet. The taxi driver, "Paddy", was sooo nice!!! He had given us a set price to pick us up and take us back to the hotel, but because we got to the restaurant 20 minutes earlier than our reservation, he took us for a little tour around that area and to this little fishing village and didn't charge us anymore! Of course we gave him a nice little tip. He was just so friendly and courteous! Ken wanted lobster so we both got it, he got a grilled lobster and I got Lobster Thermadore. We splurged but he only turns 60 once so it was well worth it and it was DELICIOUS!!!! I had never had a whole lobster like that and it was soooo good!!! He also had crab claws for a starter and I had grilled oysters. I had never had them any way but fried but those were really nice! He sure did enjoy his birthday meal and I did too, especially seeing him enjoy it so much. He LOVES seafood, it's his fave. My fave is Italian but I also love seafood - not much food I DON'T like. haha! I also slipped in a tiny little birthday cake with "60" on it. I gave it to the manager at the restaurant when I went to the restroom, right after we got there - hehe, and he had a waitress bring it to the table after we finished eating. Hehe...Ken was verrrrrry SURPRISED!!! I had bought it before the trip to Ireland and packed it in a suitcase. It was a typical English birthday or wedding cake (fruit cake with marzipan icing) but just very small, as you will see in the pics, just enough for him a nice piece of cake but he shared it with me because he was so full after his meal. :) There was also a single candle on it so I made him make a wish. ]]> Sun Jul 19 2009 Dumfries & Galloway, SW Scotland - A Night Away http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1726644.html Ken had a meeting in Glasgow, Scotland on June 12th, so we were off early, headed to Scotland. We had the motorway all the way, so got to the shopping centre where his meeting was in only 3 hours (even stopped on the way for about 20 minutes to have a cuppa) and he was finished with his meeting by noon. Heading back home, we went into the south western corner of Scotland. We stayed overnight in a beautiful B&B I had found Thursday on the net, had searched all day cause most were full for the weekend. Luckily this one had a vacant room for Friday night and believe me, we were lucky!!! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there!!! The retired couple that own and run it were soooo nice and from Lancashire (he was from Bolton and she was from Bury - both not too far from where we live). She is a qualified chef and we decided to have our evening meal there and it was heavenly! OOOh my! I took photos of this scrumptious meal and also her breakfast was fabulous! Besides offering us the full English breakfast and some other options such as pastries and a fabulous variety of fresh fruit, she actually also offered one of my fave American breakfasts - French Toast with Maple Syrup, and boy oh boy, did I take her up on that one! I hadn't been any place since leaving the states, where we had been offered that. It was a real treat for me! Ken and I both want to stay there again! It gets kind of expensive with the evening meal because that is extra, of course, but if any meal was ever worth it, that one was! We raved & raved about it to Jeannie (the chef) and her hubby, Mike. When we got back home, I wrote them a handwritten note thanking them for their hospitality and Jeannie's fabulous meals. The sea coast was only about 3 miles from the B&B, so we had a nice look around the area. It was a huge surprise for us! Even Ken, who has traveled most of the UK over the years with his work, had never been to this particular area of Scotland and we both absolutely want to go back. What's great is, it isn't all that far, only about 3 hours from where we live. We can't wait to explore more of the area, just gotta save up! LOL OUR DELICIOUS MEAL: Starter: salad of: greens, cherry tomatoes, green olives (my faves), parma ham, salami & homemade french bread filled with garlic butter - absolutely delicious! Main Course: a delicious medly of very fresh king prawns, scallops & salmon in a cream sauce, plus asparagus & a sweet potato mash in a homemade pastry- heavenly!!! Dessert: a wonderful chocolate mousse with strawberries in it - sooo rich and yummy! Last but not least, a selection of fresh fruit, crackers & cheese Hope you enjoy our little getaway with us. ]]> Fri Jun 12 2009 Day Out in Cumbria, NW England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1719507.html We decided to have a day out in Cumbria and explore Ken's old haunts when he was a kid. He grew up in the city of Manchester but as a child his mother would work summers at Nethertown running her own snack bar near the sea. We also visited Cleator, where his mother and grandparents were from, and his mother and father moved back there when they retired. It is only 3 miles from Nethertown and 3-4 miles from the pretty little village of Egremont, where the ruin of Egremont Castle is. We drove to St Bees, near Egremont, to have lunch in the Tea Rooms there by the Irish Sea. We also enjoyed the Cumbria countryside and beautiful Eskdale. ]]> Sun May 3 2009 DAY 5 - CORNWALL Holiday (heading back home) http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1706237.html We woke up to rain this day, had a good breakfast again and headed home. We were both sad to leave Cornwall. :( The people were friendly and The Lizarad Peninsula is so peaceful and a great place to relax, altho we never seem to relax much because we are always on the move. We always have so much we want to see and not enough time. :) The rain quit about the time we left and we headed north, through Devon, of course - the only way out of Cornwall. Ken took me to Plymouth in Devon, because I had been wanting to see where the pilgrims left England for New England. When he said we were going there, I teared up for JOY! I don't know but I just was so thrilled and kind of relieved to be able to see where that happened and I teared up again when I saw the momument where they boarded the Mayflower. It was a very moving experience which I will always remember. (Thank you, Ken, for taking me there.) When we left Plymouth, we headed back across Dartmoor and enjoyed a lot of lovely countryside before heading on back home. It's a 4-5 hour drive from Dartmoor so we had to get on the road. The weather was beautiful every day (only rained the last night). Leaving The Lizarad Peninsula and heading north toward home, we drove by several of these old tin mine ruins in Cornwall. I got Ken to stop once so I could take a pic. Smeaton's Tower Lighthouse (built in the 1700's) was once out in Plymouth Sound, but was moved brick by brick to this location in Plymouth later. This is a Memorial built remembering the place where the pilgrims left Plymouth, England headed to New England, where they landed near Plymouth Rock. if you need to, click on pic to enlarge just a tad Memorial to the Mayflower which took the pilgrims to the colonies in 1620. ]]> Sat Apr 25 2009 DAY 4 - CORNWALL Holiday http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1706202.html This 4th day of our holiday we set off for a few new places. We first went to Kennack Sands, a pretty little cove, not far from our B&B. Then we went on to Mullion Cove and Mullion Village, only 3 or 4 miles from where we were staying. In fact, we ran into our landlady of the B&B while we were roaming around Mullion Village. Mullion Cove is gorgeous and we really enjoyed taking a lot of photos there. We also met a sweet kitty there that gave 3 dogs a hard time! It was so funny! She was NOT sweet to those dogs but turned into an angel when we were petting her. We stayed at the cove a while and then drove back into the village of Mullion and took a few pics. It's a charming little village, wouldn't mind living there. Then we drove on a ways to Porthleven, a larger village with a large harbour. The tide was out so not the greatest shots but that's part of it, tide is in sometimes and out sometimes, just have to appreciate the beauty of whatever and I think Ken and I do, cause we certainly love these fishing villages and coves. Then we drove through the country a good ways stopping for lunch at a charming tea room and then on to the picturesque village of Helford. It was beautiful there! Would NOT mind living there at all!!! On the way back to Ruan Minor, where our B&B was, we stopped once more in the fishing village of Coverack, which was very pretty! I liked it there a lot too! The water was so pretty as you can see. When we got back to the B&B, we asked the landlady of the B&B where a good pub restaurant was. We were going to walk down to Cadgwith Cove Inn again (where we had a DELICIOUS supper the first night) but it started raining really hard so no walking 10 minutes down there and then having to walk back too. According to the forecast, we were in for a night of heavy rain and they were right! Anyway, we ended up driving a little ways to nice country pub restaurant and had a yummy meal but I forgot to take pics. Guess by now we were tired! Then we drove through the country a good ways stopping for lunch at a charming tea room and then on to the picturesque village of Helford. It was beautiful there! Would NOT mind living there at all!!! On the way back to Ruan Minor, where our B&B was, we stopped once more in the fishing village of Coverack, which was very pretty! I liked it there a lot too! The water was so pretty as you can see. When we got back to the B&B, we asked the landlady of the B&B where a good pub restaurant was. We were going to walk down to Cadgwith Cove Inn again (where we had a DELICIOUS supper the first night) but it started raining really hard so no walking 10 minutes down there and then having to walk back too. According to the forecast, we were in for a night of heavy rain and they were right! Anyway, we ended up driving a little ways to nice country pub restaurant and had a yummy meal but I forgot to take pics. Guess by now we were tired! ]]> Fri Apr 24 2009 DAY 3 - CORNWALL Holiday http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1705172.html Well, on Day 3 we got up and headed to Port Isaac in N.W. Cornwall, about an hour and a half from where we were. Being HUGE fans of the hit British TV Series, Doc Martin, we had to go visit Port Isaac, where the show is filmed. We parked and walked down into the fishing village and to our amazement and surprise, one of the first things we saw, after getting into the village, was "Louisa" (Catherine Catz) talking to some people apparently associated with the show. They were going to do some filming that day! Needless to say we got excited!!! LOL We walked over and met "Louisa" because she wasn't busy yet; she was so nice and friendly! I got a great shot of her and Ken! He was excited, even if he won't admit it! :) We saw them film 2 scenes and decided we better go on and get to our next destination of Padstow. We planned to eat a late lunch at Rick Stein's Fish n Chips in the fishing village of Padstow, not too far from Port Isaac. We did, but were extremely disappointed in the chips (to me they weren't any better than frozen chips ya buy at the grocery store). We enjoyed the fish and our battered oysters and scallops - they were yummy!!! After eating, we took a nice walk. After our walk, we then headed across Cornwall and south a bit to the quaint fishing village of Mevagissey. We arrived there around 6pm and it was overcast and very windy & chilly, so I put on my 2 jackets - my thin rain jacket and a fleece jacket I had in the car. We walked around and enjoyed the pretty village and harbour. I would love to go back to Mevagissey when it was sunny, was very impressed with the lovely place. We were starting to walk down a road to Port Isaac village but I caught a shot of this amazing rock formation - looking the opposite direction of Port Isaac. We got up and ate a nice breakfast. Ken got a full English breakfast which consists of: a fried egg, baked beans (which are pork n beans to us Americans), fried tomato, pork sausage, English bacon, black pudding, toast & jam and of course his cuppa tea. I just had sausage & bacon with toast & jam. The full English is not for me - can't handle the beans & tomato for breakfast! We also had fresh fruit before our breakfast and a glass of juice. The B&B is fabulous, clean & comfortable! I would recommend it to anyone! ~ New Thatch B&B, The Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall ~ We ate and left for a day out seeing the beautiful sights of The Lizard Peninsula in the very south of Cornwall. We visited a couple of pretty coves & villages nearby and also The Lizard Point, the most southernly point of England. Be sure to read the descriptions under each photo. You can sure tell this thatched cottage is OLD and in need of some repair but still charming, to me. This is in the area of Church Cove. An ancient church at Church Cove. It's a 6 hour drive and we stopped a few times on the way down too but it turned out to be a great day! We went through the county of Devon and we stopped first at a small village called Moretonhamstead near Dartmoor. Just walked around and took some pics. Charming little place! Then on Dartmoor Ken took me to the Miniature Pony Centre, a place I had found on the net that I wanted to see. We ate lunch there (Cornish Pasties) and spent a couple of hours enjoying the animals. Then we headed on over Dartmoor enjoying the scenery and stopping at an ancient clapper bridge (hundreds of years old). It was so pretty there! Also I got to see some wild ponies on Dartmoor and that was fun! Took us about 2 more hours from Dartmoor to get to The Lizard Peninsula in southern Cornwall and to Ruan Minor, the tiny village where our B&B was there. That evening we walked 10 minutes from the B&B, down to the ancient fishing village of Cadgwith Cove, and had a delicious supper at the Cadgwith Inn restaurant. ]]> Tue Apr 21 2009 Lancashire countryside in Lambing Season http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1685422.html I had been DYING to go for a ride in the country to see some baby lambs and finally on a beautiful Sunday we went for a long ride up into the Lancashire countryside. It's Spring and many lambs are born and many more to come. I really had fun taking pics of them! We first stopped in the town of Clitheroe where there is the remains of a castle and just walked around a bit. Then we headed on into the countryside to the tiny village of Bolton by Bowland, a charming little place and just took some pics. Took more pics of lambs and headed to the TINY TINY village of Dunsop Bridge where we planned to eat lunch in one of our fave cafes called Puddleduck Cafe (there's always several ducks roaming around there by this little river). It was a beautiful day so we really really enjoyed being outside. We then headed back toward home over some moors and as you will see, we went past some wind turbines near the town of Rochdale and also came across a fire on the moors, which was kinda scary since it was so near the road. Then we went on to visit Ken's mum that day and then home. Hope you enjoy your day out with us in the Lancashire countryside on a bright pleasant Spring day. ]]> Sun Mar 29 2009 East Yorkshire - coast at Bridlington & some little villages http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1678503.html It was going to be a sunny day so we headed toward the East Yorkshire Coast to the town of Bridlington - about 1 1/2 hours from where we live. We had been there a few years ago but not when the sun was out nor the tide in, so I was anxious to see the sea with a blue sky! :) We first stopped in the town of Market Weighton and had a walk around. I went in a charity shop and found me some cute sheep notecards & stationery for 50p. :) Then on to Bridlington but we almost didn't find a parking place in any car park because we got there at about 11:00 so already lots of people there, and there were several car parks, but finally we did find a spot and had a little ways to walk, but that was ok. We walked through the town centre and down to the harbour and got some fried scampi & chips, found a bench and enjoyed our lunch. After we had been there a while, looked in some shops and enjoyed the sea views, we left heading back home the way we came, but we took some side roads and stopped in 4 little villages to have a roam around and take some photos. It's about 45 minutes from home so not too far. It started snowing & laying while we were there but we had managed to enjoy a nice lunch. We quickly headed home before the snow got too bad. Just mostly took pics around the Haworth Railway Station and in the old main part of the village, took pics of some of the shops there. It's a great touristy place with lots of neat shops and tea rooms! Hope you enjoy your afternoon out with us. ]]> Sun Jan 25 2009 Weekend in The Cotswolds ( Gloucestershire & Warwickshire, England) http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1638746.html Ken and I drove to the beautiful Cotswolds, in The Heart of England, on Friday 2nd of January, to meet some friends that had invited us down, to the B&B where they were staying, for the weekend. On the way down we had plenty of time as it's only 2 1/2 hours from home. We visited a few villages and took a few photos and had a yummy lunch in a charming old village called Chipping Campden. I was starved so I was ready to eat! My favorite part of going places is eating out! LOL From there, we drove on to Bourton on the Water, where the B&B was. We first walked around the village a little while, as it was getting dark, and Ken took a few photos. Then to the B&B we went and got settled in and then joined Brenda & Jack downstairs for the evening meal which was very nice and then we all sat and talked for ages. For our meal we had: a nice soup for a starter, then roast lamb, roasted potatoes & a vairety of veggies and for dessert we had a delicious apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. Saturday we ate breakfast at 9:00 and headed to an outdoor market, even tho it was very COLD. It was interesting so I could ignore the bitter cold for a little while. Later we drove in the countryside a good deal and ended up at a very small village called Bibury - a VERY CHARMING place! Got back to the B&B, had a rest and shower and then a nice meal again and a nice long chat with our friends. That night for our meal we had: for a starter I had prawn cocktail and Ken had soup, then we had roast chicken, potatoes and veggies and homemade toffee sponge cake. (The landlady/hostess was a very good cook so we would definitely go back!) Sunday we ate breakfast and headed to a car boot sale in the FREEZING COLD temps but only stayed there about 30 minutes and left....TOO COLD and not a very good car boot either. On our way back home, we headed to Stratford upon Avon, where Shakespeare was born and lived when he wasn't in London and other places. We ate at a charming VERY VERY OLD tea room (most likely originally a house built back in the 1400's - 1500's) and just browsed around the town. Fun place to visit but expensive because of it being Shakespeare's birth place. We then headed on home a little after lunch. I realize this album has more photos than normal but I just decided to put them all in one album instead of making two. I have written descriptions under most photos so using the slide show, you may not get it all read in time. I always recommend just using Next to go to each photo, then you can go at your own rate to enjoy the photos. Just click on the first photo thumbnail and it will come up, then Next.... ]]> Fri Jan 2 2009 Autumn in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1613169.html I had been wanting to go for a nice long ride in the country to see some Fall colors, so we decided to drive into Derbyshire. It turned into a beautiful sunny day and not too chilly. Ken and I visited a few little villages and beautiful countryside that day. We came upon the charming village of Winster and it was so interesting. Looked like it hadn't changed in three hundred years. We parked and got out and walked all around the little village. All we could see was one shop - The Village Shop and also the post office. Ken was having a ball looking around - was like it was just kept away from modern times. Lots of cars there that day, the only bad thing! We would love to visit it when most of the cars are gone, during the week. Remember each photo has some sort of description under it. ]]> Sun Sep 28 2008 Walk along the canal in Mossley, England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1595453.html Ken and I didn't do much this weekend but we did go down to the canal that runs through Bottom Mossley (we live in Top Mossley or some people call it Upper Mossley - haha!) and we took a walk along the canal. Not too many pics this time so ya should be able to view the album in about 5 minutes. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed being out in the sunshine. Also we were so happy to see Mr. Goose! I had named him that when I first came over here in 2002. We hadn't been down to the canal in a good while so was afraid he might not be around anymore (we think he's old) but there he was - in all his glory, ruling the roost, as usual! haha! WE WALKED DOWN THE CANAL TO WHERE THE FLATS WERE BUILT AND THEN UP TO THE ROAD AND WALKED BACK TO ROACHES LOCH (THIS PUB IS CALLED WOODEND TAVERN) ALMOST TO ROACHES LOCH KEN OVERLOOKING THE CAR PARK WHERE WE HAD PARKED & THE RIVER TAME (PARKING USED TO BE FREE THERE, NOW THE COUNCIL STARTED CHARGING!!!)

]]> Sun Oct 12 2008 PART 2 - Quarry Bank Mill & Styal Estate, Cheshire, England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1584681.html Well, I hope you saw PART 1 cause this is the continuation of it, even if it is a week later. LOL Ken & I decided to go back to Quarry Bank Mill & Styal Estate to see the old cottages in Styal where the mill workers lived back in the 1700's & 1800's. I read while touring the mill last week that the workers had 30 minutes to leave the mill and get home to eat lunch and get back, and it was at least a 10 minute walk to their cottages. I bet they had to run! WOW! Looks like they could have had at least 45 minutes! LOL The pics start out in the tiny village of Styal with a pic of the post office and pub (that's about it). LOL Then you turn onto a road and walk to the Oak Cottages, which were the workers' cottages and are still lived in today by people renting them. (The National Trust owns them because they are part of the Quarry Bank Mill Estate and The National Trust owns all that land and the mill.) They are out in the country and it's beautiful, so I betcha the rent is high! I would absolutely LOVE to live in one of them!!! This area is about 40 minutes from where we live. LOL Ken & I decided to go back to Quarry Bank Mill & Styal Estate to see the old cottages in Styal where the mill workers lived back in the 1700's & 1800's. I read while touring the mill last week that the workers had 30 minutes to leave the mill and get home to eat lunch and get back, and it was at least a 10 minute walk to their cottages. I bet they had to run! WOW! Looks like they could have had at least 45 minutes! LOL The pics start out in the tiny village of Styal with a pic of the post office and pub (that's about it). LOL Then you turn onto a road and walk to the Oak Cottages, which were the workers' cottages and are still lived in today by people renting them. (The National Trust owns them because they are part of the Quarry Bank Mill Estate and The National Trust owns all that land and the mill.) They are out in the country and it's beautiful, so I betcha the rent is high! I would absolutely LOVE to live in one of them!!! This area is about 40 minutes from where we live. STYAL POST OFFICE/VILLAGE SHOP & BEAUTY SHOP SHIP INN PUB IN STYAL ON THE WAY TO OAK COTTAGES THAT THE MILL WORKERS LIVED IN ON PATH TO THE COTTAGES MY FIRST VIEW OF THE COTTAGES! I JUST LOVE THESE LITTLE COTTAGES (TERRACED HOUSES)! WOULD LOVE TO LIVE IN ONE BUT THE RENT IS PROBABLY VERY HIGH! A FLOWER GARDEN IN FRONT OF THE COTTAGES THERE'S KEN! THE SCHOOL BESIDE A ROW OF COTTAGES I JUST LOVE THIS COTTAGE ON THE END!! LOVE THOSE FLOWERS!!! THIS IS BETWEEN THE ROWS OF COTTAGES, THE BACK ENTRANCE AND ORIGINALLY THE PRIVY WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT BACK OF EACH HOUSE - THAT PARTICULAR MILL OWNER GAVE THEM EACH A PRIVY, WHICH WAS UNCOMMON IN THOSE DAYS! WHERE THE OLD STORE WAS ANOTHER ROW OF COTTAGES WHAT IS LEFT OF STYAL CROSS THE COMMUNITY CHAPEL, VERY NEAR THE ROWS OF COTTAGES WALKING THRU THE NEARBY WOODS IN THE WOODS WALKING A TRAIL IN THE NEARBY WOODS STILL IN THE WOODS THE RIVER BOLLIN RIVER BOLLIN THERE'S KEN AGAIN!! LOL WALKING BACK TOWARD THE COTTAGES AGAIN WE MET ALL THESE LADIES WALKING THEIR DOGS!!! MUST HAVE BEEN A CLUB??? LOL I ASKED THIS LADY IF I COULD TAKE A PHOTO! ONE OF HER DOGS ONLY HAS 3 LEGS. ON THE TRAIL BACK TO THE COTTAGES (WE WALKED AROUND ALMOST TO THE MILL AGAIN AND BACK TO THE APPRENTICE HOUSE) WE WALKED BY THE APPRENTICE HOUSE CATTLE IN THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE! ON THE WAY ACROSS THE FIELD TO THE COTTAGES AGAIN ALMOST BACK TO THE CHAPEL - A DISTANT VIEW BACK AT THE COTTAGES THE METHODIST CHAPEL AND SOME LITTLE THATCHED-ROOFED COTTAGES NEXT TO IT MOOOOO i WANT TO LIVE HERE!!! THE PERFECT LITTEL ENGLISH COUNTRY COTTAGE!!! PATH BY SOME COTTAGES & FLOWERS BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS THE CHAPEL IS ON DOWN THAT ROAD - THE HIKER WAS HAVING A REST (ALSO THERE IS THE STYAL CROSS TO THE LEFT) THIS SWEET LITTLE OLD LADY ASKED US IF WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HER TAKE OUT PIC

]]> Sun Sep 21 2008 PART 1 - Quarry Bank Mill & Styal Estate, Cheshire, England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1584610.html On the 13th of this month it was Heritage OPEN DAYS which means anybody could get in most of the Heritage sites all over England for FREE, so Ken and I chose Quarry Bank Mill. We had been wanting to go there for a while. Quarry Bank Mill is a very old cotton mill that was in its heyday during the industrial revolution in the Manchester area. It has been turned into a museum and it's really interesting because they show you all the steps to making cotton cloth, from the cotton bail on thru the process. We thoroughly enjoyed it! We also walked around the beautiful grounds and to the Apprentice House where they took children out of the workhouses and trained them to work in the mill. Actually the owner of this mill was a lot more humane, as he didn't work children under 9 years old. Many mills worked them as young as 7, if ya can believe it! We had a nice lunch in the little restaurant there on the grounds in part of the mill and walked around some more in the garden area. There are still standing and being lived in - the cottages that this mill owner built for his employees there in the tiny village of Styal way back in the late 1700's. We wanted to go see them but ended up going on back home, BUT.....the PART 2 album is us back the next weekend to visit the Styal Estate cottages. ]]> Sat Sep 13 2008 PART 3 - SCOTLAND Holiday http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1576136.html This last album has the rest of the photos from the last day. We had a really nice day out, nice weather. It was a bit warmer. We had gone to the Baxter's Centre before (in Part 2). Then we drove way way out in the countryside to a BIG distillery (whisky distilleries are all over the country of Scotland, large ones and small family run ones). We were booked for a tour of the distillery so we went (I didn't care for it but went anyway since it was included & paid for with the coach holiday). Somehow we just forgot to take any photos. I guess I wasn't thrilled with photos of a distillery but I am surprised Ken didn't take any! :) The countryside all around it was gorgeous but didn't get any good shots except thru the bus windows. Oh well. After that, we stopped at The Heather Centre (a garden centre) not too far from Carrbridge, on the way back to the hotel. It was nice! Just be sure and read all the descriptions under the photos, ok? Hope you all have enjoyed our little holiday with us. We were gone from August 25 - 29th. We want to share our time with you. We stayed at the Carrbridge Hotel in the beautiful little village of Carrbridge in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by mountains & moorland. We went out each day, after a hearty breakfast at the hotel, on excursions to different areas and came back to a delicious meal for supper in the hotel. Some of the best food we've had on holidays with this coach company - the food was excellent!!! Also some nights we had entertainment in the hotel after supper, so that was nice. I am putting descriptions under each photo for you of the places we visited. It will be best to just click on Next for each photo. Starts out still in the city of Carlisle, which is in NW England, not too too far from the Scottish border. It's a nice place! We walked to the castle and went inside, enjoyed that and then walked back thru the city centre to the railway station to head back to Yorkshire, where we started in The Yorkshire Dales (my FAVE part of England). Also some pics of the farm B&B we stayed at that night before coming home the next day. It was the best zoo type park we've ever seen! We were always so much closer to the animals and many harmless ones were able to roam free and it was so much fun seeing them and getting so close! They had so much room to roam around in (even the ones behind fences) and a natural habitat for them; it was GREAT!!! Here are some photos I've chosen, of the many we took, to share with you. ]]> Mon May 26 2008 Whalley Abbey & the Church of All Hallows at Great Mitton, Lancashire http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1529775.html Ken and I spent several hours at The Chipping Steam Rally this particular day, which is another album listed here in our photo gallery. After the rally, we drove through the Lancashire countryside heading home. We stopped at a little church, called The Church of All Hallows at Great Mitton, to have a look around. Then after taking several photos, we took a little detour to visit the village of Whalley and Whalley Abbey ruins before heading on home here to Mossley, also in Lancashire. We really enjoyed our walk around Whalley Abbey as it was empty of people (was actually closed but the gate was still open so we just walked inside). It must have originally been a gorgeous setting for the abbey as the grounds are still beautiful. Have fun walking around with us. We decided on this particular Saturday to head to the Chipping Steam Rally about 45 minutes from us. We hadn't been to this one and we were pleased with it. It's just a very lovely area! We walked around town, had lunch at a nice little cafe, then walked down to the Llangollen Railway Station and watched a steam train, which thrilled Ken, as he loves anything steam but especially trains! Afterwards, we left and got on a little narrow road going through some beautiful countryside and ended up at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. We walked on the aqueduct and then headed on home, after a really nice day out. Hope you've enjoyed your day out with us. ]]> Sun May 11 2008 PART 1 - Day Out in North Wales http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1515646.html These are some pics of a day we recently spent in North Wales. This area is about 1 1/2 hours drive from where we live and absolutely beautiful scenery! North Wales is one of my favorite places in the UK. We saw lots of lambs as it's lambing season and I had to get out and try to capture a few photos. Then we drove on to the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey and had a wonderful walk around there. I took pics of the wild flowers where ever I saw some. They were so pretty, saw them all day! After the abbey, we drove just a little ways and visited a small church out in the country. After walking around the church, enjoying the views, we walked down a path behind the church to the River Dee, where several families were enjoying our warmest day so far this year. This was a really pretty area, as you can see. It was so much fun watching the children play. This area reminded me of growing up in the country in Alabama. Hope you enjoy this part of our day. ]]> Sun May 11 2008 Skipton Market & Canal Festival, Yorkshire http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1507500.html It was a nice day and we were itching to get out or at least I KNOW I was! LOL Ken & I drove to the town of Skipton (Gateway to The Yorkshire Dales is what it is called). It's about 1 1/2 hours from us. We knew they were having a market but were surprised to find they were also having a canal festival, so it was a fun day, walking around and taking photos of everything. We shopped (or I shopped..haha) and found myself 2 new hand bags, which I needed very badly, and we bought a variety of sweets of which one kind was chocolate covered liquorice and it is YUMMY!!! We had never seen that before - wanna go get more! LOL Oh! I also found me a cute cap to wear with my new jacket Ken got me recently at another market. (I don't buy a lot of clothes but it seems I am needing everything at once.) Then we had a delicious lunch at The Red Lion Pub. Ken had a giant Yorkshire Pudding filled with Cumberland Sausage, mashed potatoes, peas & gravy. I got a giant Yorkshire Pudding filled with roast beef, gravy & chips and that was the best roast beef I have had in ages - so tender!!! Then we just rambled around the market some more and went into the town hall where they were having a craft show and Ken bought me a beautiful pair of earrings. Then we went on to the canal festival and enjoyed the boats and an exibition of owls. They were so pretty! I never saw owls up close like that till I came here to the UK. Blackpool was once the most popular tourist resort in England. It is still very popular party town for hen and stag nights and live performances by comedians, singers and such. It's a little too much of a party town for me but this was a nice quiet private party. :) Since it is an hour's drive from where we live, we decided to spend the night in the hotel, as most of the guests did. We enjoyed the sea front views across from the hotel that afternoon and then the party that night. It was a nice party with a Scottish singer performing (he was really good). ]]> Sat Apr 26 2008 Day 3 Anniv. Weekend - Holy Island & Lindisfarne Castle, NE England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1488609.html Well everybody, this is our last day of our anniversary weekend that Ken so sweetly secretly planned for me. He's my hero. This morning Ken got up and went for a walk around Alnmouth taking some photos, since we hadn't had time really to do that and it was always about dark when we get back from the day out. So he took pics while I got ready. When he got back in, we joined a few more people in the dining room for breakfast. We met a nice couple in the dining room so it was nice talking to them. They were going the same place we were that day, to Holy Island. We left right after breakfast and headed to the beautiful village of Etal and then to another lovely village called Ford. The landlady at the B&B had told us about these places, so we took a drive there before heading on to Holy Island. Our favorite of the two was Etal, so pretty! There was the ruins of a castle right there in the village also, so we got some pics. Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England, they are everywhere!! LOL I want to go back up in that area just to find more castle ruins. haha! Then it was time to drive on north a bit to Holy Island just off the coast a bit. We had to cross a causeway when the tide was out to get there so Ken had figured all that out. Recently a car had got caught in the tide coming back in so it had to stay there till the tide went back out again! The people were rescued tho, thank goodness. That certainly wouldn't be any fun, would it!? When we got across the causeway and parked in the car park in the village of Lindisfarne on Holy Island, we started walking to Lindisfarne Castle which was probably a 2 mile round trip. The entire walk was beside the sea and just beautiful!!! It was chilly and windy but the sun was out most of the time. We were so fortunate as rain had been forecast. Hope you enjoy our photos of this lovely journey. This turned out to be my favorite castle I have been inside, simply due to the fact that it is smaller and the rooms were small and cozy. I could definitely live there. haha! I took several pics inside the castle too, so hope you enjoy those. After we got back to the village of Lindisfarne, we ate a yummy lunch in a cafe there and then walked around the village and took lots of pics of the parish church and the ancient Lindisfarne Priory. The priory was closed but we took pics from the outside. I didn't want to leave when it was time to head home. It had been such a lovely lovely weekend and I didn't want it to end. Blame me? We do hope you'all enjoyed the long weekend with us. Northumberland is a beautiful county and we definitely plan to go back. I love the history!!!! ]]> Sun Mar 16 2008 Day 2 Anniv. weekend - Beautiful day on the Northumberland coast visiting 2 castles, one being famous Bamburgh Castle, NE England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1486964.html Here is Day 2 of our anniversary getaway. It was a very busy day as you will see when you view the photos. Saturday morning, our actual anniversary date - March 15th, we got up and enjoyed the nice view out the window. Ken did very well choosing a B&B and surprising me. When we got ready, we went into the dining room to eat a hearty breakfast. Ken had his hearty breakfast of orange juice, fresh kippers, scrambled eggs, toast with honey & a cuppa tea. I had my UNhealthy treat of a breakfast: orange juice, 3 small Scottish style pancakes with maple syrup, a danish with chocolate inside, bacon, & a cuppa tea. We then left for a full day out. We headed to the small village of Craster on the Northumberland Coast and enjoyed taking a few photos there and then headed on the 3 mile round-trip walk to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. We took our time and enjoyed the walk along the coast all the way to the castle. As you will see, there were sheep and pretty views. I enjoyed that walk as much as anything else we did. Altho it had rained just a bit when we first started out this morning, it turned nice and stayed that way the rest of our weekend. We were very thankful and happy. When we got back to the village of Craster, tired but still smiling, we drove on to Bamburgh Castle and Village not too far on up the coast. I have seen this castle on TV many times and had mentioned that I would love to see it. It is very famous for its view and was voted by the British people to be one of Britain's Best Views. It is! Also it is still lived in and would you believe you can rent an apartment in it? Wouldn't mind living there with that view but can't imagine what the rent must be!! Whoohoo!!! The views from the beach below are the best, just gorgeous! We also went into the village of Bamburgh. It's a charming little village that I would NOT mind living in at all!!! Simply beautiful village right next to the castle and coast - a dream place to live!!! Can ya imagine?? By the time we finished at Bamburgh, the sun was just starting to go down but we stopped for a few minutes in the coastal fishing village of Seahouses and took a few pics. Then we were off back to the B&B to get ready for our anniversary meal. Ken had reservations at a little Bistro in the village, so we got dressed and walked there. We had a great meal which you can see in the photos. haha....we were hungry and it was delicious!!!! Hope ya enjoy the photos. Remember, click on first photo and then Next and away ya go. ]]> Sat Mar 15 2008 Day 1 Anniv. weekend - Journey across northern England along the route of Hadrian's Wall built by the Romans 2000 years ago http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1486628.html Ken took me on the best anniversary weekend ever!!! We want to share our weekend getaway with you'all and hope you will enjoy the scenery as much as we did. Friday morning we drove up into northern Cumbria and then headed east across very northern England toward the county of Northumberland. Ken took me a very scenic route and it turned out to be a beautiful day, even tho rain had been forecasted. We were having a ball taking photos! We headed into east Cumbria and came to the ruins of an old priory called Lanercost Priory. We stopped there a little while and enjoyed walking around and taking some photos. We then drove on till we came to some of the ruins of Hadrian's Wall that was built over 2000 years ago by the Romans, to keep the "barbarian ancient Scots" out of England. That is so interesting to me. This wall was all the way across northern England and very big! Not a lot is left but you can sit there on the ruins of the wall in places and just imagine how large it must have been originally. We drove on along the Hadrian's Wall route until we came to the remains of Birdoswald Bastle (a Roman fort), stopped there and took photos, and a few more of the wall there. A major reason much of the wall is gone is due to people long ago taking the stones to build homes and farm buildings. Then we were getting hungry but we drove a while till we entered the county of Northumberland at the village of Gilsland and then came to the little village of Greenhead. There we found a tea room and had a nice lunch and afterwards we walked to the ruins of Thirlwall Castle, about 1/2 mile from the village. It was a beautiful day so we really enjoyed our walk there and back, even saw some sheep being herded up by a sheep dog (Border Collie). We drove on and stopped at several more charming little places and another castle ruin, enjoying the beautiful day. We finally ended up in the village of Alnmouth near the coast. We got there in time to rest a few minutes and then we walked to the main street of the village to find a place to eat. They had several pub-restaurants so we had a nice choice. We want to share our weekend getaway with you'all and hope you will enjoy the scenery as much as we did. ]]> Fri Mar 14 2008 Staithes & Whitby Bay on the N. Yorkshire Coast, England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1474209.html We had a really nice day driving up to th N. Yorkshire Coast. The sun came out and it was pleasant even tho it was pretty cool. Took about 2 1/2 hours to get to Staithes, a charming very old fishing village, where we had a nice walk around and took lots of photos. Then we drove down the coast a few minutes to Whitby Bay. It was crowded as it usually is on a nice day. It's a very popular tourist area. Whitby Abbey is said to have inspired Bram Stoker in the writing of his classic, Dracula. Very interesting and fun town! We love to go there and get fish n chips! Each photo has a description under it and you can enlarge any photo you like by clicking on Full Size. ]]> Sun Feb 17 2008 A Day in The Beautiful Yorkshire Dales, England http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1472434.html We took off this lovely sunny day wanting to get out in the countryside and enjoy the sunshine, after so much rain. Feb. was a sunny month for us this year, which is very unusual. We drove to The Yorkshire Dales up in North Yorkshire, my very fave place in England. We came across an area we had never driven through; the mountains and hills in the distance were so beautiful and of course we came across some beautiful white sheep. You can see the narrow little roads we travel to get some of our best views. Then we drove to the tiny village of Hardraw where we walked to Hardraw Falls, which we had never seen before. It was very full and pretty so we enjoyed that. Then we went back to the pub, that owns the land the waterfalls is on, and had a nice hot beef & gravy sandwich for lunch. Afterwards, we drove on through more of The Dales and started on our way back home, stopping at a pretty area near a farm and took more photos and then on through the little village of Buckden and on home. It was a lovely day out and refreshed me. I need some countryside as often as I can get it. :) Hope you enjoyed your journey through part of The Yorkshire Dales with us. DRIVING THROUGH A NEW AREA FOR US LOVED THESE SHEEP - THEY CAME TO ME, SO PRETTY! LOL IN THE PUB INSIDE THE PUB ON PATH TO HARDRAW WATERFALLS BEHIND THE PUB LITTLE AREA WHERE SMALL CONCERTS ARE HELD WAY TO WATERFALLS WAY TO WATERFALLS THERE IT IS!!! HARDRAW FALLS HERE COMES A BUNCH OF HIKERS! We had never been there and had seen a bit about it on a TV show, so decided to go have a look. It's about 45 min to an hour from where we live so it was just a nice ride. We enjoyed the countryside as I also spot a few sheep which makes me happy. When we got to Heptonstall, we walked around the charming little village and soon discovered there was an ancient parish church ruin that we thoroughly enjoyed photographing and then also the newer parish church, which isn't new at all (to me anyway). haha! I hope you enjoy the photos and being out with us. It had been raining a bit but quit, so we were able to enjoy our walk around Heptonstall. Thanks for your time. ]]> Sun Jan 27 2008 Day out in the beautiful Cheshire countryside to Little Moreton Hall & more! http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1448228.html Sunday, Jan. 6th, we decided to take a ride into the Cheshire countryside. Cheshire is a beauitful county and not too far from where we live in Lancashire. We live right near the county borders of Lancashire, Yorkshire & Cheshire. First we drove to the 500 year old Little Moreton Hall, a beautiful Tudor home. We didn't get to go inside as it was closed for the season but we will return. The grounds are beautiful and we were able to get some nice shots. It turned out to be a fine sunny day. Then we found 2 very old churches and took some photos. I love the style of these old buildings. Last we drove to the village of Gawsworth. We parked near a lake at St James Church and walked around taking photos of the pretty area. It turned out to be a wonderful day and we ended up walking a lot and getting some exercise and really neat photos. Remember most photos have descriptions under them. We drove to the ancient fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay and spent a good while walking around and taking photos. This is the kind of place we really enjoy. Then we walked, from the bay, back up the hill (whewww....boy! are we out of shape!) and then drove on down the Yorkshire Coast a bit to the resort town of Scarborough. We walked along the sea front for a while and then ate a yummy seafood lunch. While we were eating, it started raining so when we came out of the cafe, we walked around a bit, took a few more pics and left to get back home. Hope you enjoy both of these coastal towns. We like them both very much. ]]> Thu Dec 27 2007 Christmas Day & Boxing Day (the day after Xmas here in the UK) http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1435609.html Hi! Ken and I spent Christmas Day at Barbara & George's (Ken's sister & bro in law's). Barbara fixed a yummy Xmas meal, as always, and it was nice being with her and George, Ken's mum, and several of his nieces & nephews. Then the next day (Boxing Day here in the UK) we drove into the county of Cheshire to a sort of "steam gathering" at a local pub in the town of Lymm, where a few steam traction engines were on display and then we went in The Jolly Thrasher Pub for a good meal. After eating, we came out just as the engines were were moving up the highway to the next pub (kind of a pub crawl with steam engines...haha). Ken & I drove on down the road a bit to a place to stop and look at The Bridgewater Canal for a few minutes and get a few photos. Hope you all enjoy the photos. ]]> Tue Dec 25 2007 Shopping at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1429074.html We went into Ashton-under-Lyne, 3 miles from where we live in Mossley, to do some shopping and just walking around enjoying the market. This is where we usually shop each weekend. Ashton is a nice sized town and has most of what we need. There is the outdoor market and there is a big indoor market which is being refurbished, after it caught on fire a few years ago. They are hoping to have it finished in about a year from now. It was a beautiful OLD building and they are saving the outside of it and redoing the inside, which is great! Also some photos inside the small shopping mall there called The Arcade. Ken and I went on Saturday and then that night went to meet some friends for a meal and then Sunday we went back into Ashton to shop a bit more and we ate lunch at one of our fave little tea rooms. ]]> Sat Dec 15 2007 Walk to Top Withens (probably Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights) http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1420184.html Back in May of 2004, Ken & I decided to walk the part of The Bronte Trail that goes to Top Withens (the old farm that is thought to perhaps be part of Emily Bronte's inspiration for writing her famous novel, Wuthering Heights). It is known that she enjoyed walking on this very moorland. It was about a 6-7 mile round trip walk but it was a beautiful sunny day and we took our time and enjoyed every minute of the gorgeous countryside and the magnificent moors. It is an awesome feeling standing at Top Withens and seeing nothing but moorland as far as you can see. I could imagine the scenes in Wuthering Heights coming to life. You will also notice a stone bridge that is called The Bronte Bridge, a rock-like chair that is thought to be a resting place for the Bronte sisters while they were out walking, and a little waterfalls known as The Bronte Waterfalls. It is known for sure that they did walk this trail. I am not putting descriptions under each photo as I usually do because these photos take you from the beginning of our walk about a mile out of the village of Haworth (home of Emily, Charlotte & Anne Bronte) through the countryside and moors to the famous Top Withens ruin and then back a different trail through the very small village of Stanbury and by the local reservour and on up ending up where we had started. ]]> Sun May 16 2004 Day Out in Derbyshire http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1409550.html It was a pretty but chilly day and we decided to get out of the house and take a drive into the county of Derbyshire and to the town of Chesterfield where the church is with the crooked spire (caused from using unseasoned timbers, when it was built, that have bent over time). It is unusual and interesting. :) We roamed around the market there as Chesterfield has been a market town since medieval days. Then we drove to the charming little town of Bakewell, where we watched the ducks, geese & swan on The River Wye for a while and then had lunch at a little bakery-cafe. We each had a pastie filled with beef & veggies. It was the biggest we've ever had, too big. haha! Then I had coffee cake with ice cream for dessert. Don't think Ken got any dessert but I don't feel complete till I have my dessert, UNFORTUNATELY! LOL We then drove on to The Chatsworth Estate where Chatsworth House is, not too far from Bakewell. Chatsworth House and Estate is one of my very FAVE stately homes that I've seen since I've been in England - it just blows your mind away when you come upon it!!! The surroundings are just breath taking!!! It was a gorgeous fall day and it was just beautiful there. ]]> Sat Nov 3 2007 Days 13 & 14 in AMERICA http://kenandjaniesjourneys.fotopic.net/c1395279.html Monday morning we got up and left Pigeon Forge, heading toward Nashville. We took our time and enjoyed the countryside after stopping to eat breakfast at The Waffle House (we ate there twice while in the states and it was good both times). Ken wanted to see a particular lake and some marina's so we took a roundabout way back to Nashville. It was a pretty drive, another gorgeous day! When we finally got to Lebanon, a town about 30 minutes from The Nashville Airport, we got into our motel, rested a little while and then went to eat at a Chinese buffet restaurant. It was nice and Ken enjoyed those crab legs, all he wanted! Tuesday morning (our last day in America - boo hoo!) we got up, had a free breakfast at the motel, and headed to Angie's house for a final visit, before our flight back to Manchester. We visited with her, Noah and Xander for about 2 hours and sadly had to say goodbye - very hard to do!!!!! Then we headed to the airport early to check the rental car back in and have enough time as is expected cause of security. We had lunch there and roamed around a bit and our flight left on time. We changed planes in Philadelphia again and we headed east to England. We left Philly about 40 minutes late but we made up the time and landed in Manchester on time at 8am (GMT). BOY were we tired but it was a WONDERFUL trip that we totally enjoyed!!! :) Monday 1 October 2007: Monday morning we got up and left Pigeon Forge, heading toward Nashville. KEN AT THE NASHVILLE AIRPORT JANIE AT THE AIRPORT TAKING OFF FROM NASHVILLE HILLS & A LAKE FROM THE PLANE RIGHT AFTER TAKING OFF AT NASHVILLE GETTING HIGHER AND HIGHER......THE CLOUDS WERE SO BEAUTIFUL!!! JANIE & KEN ON THE PLANE HEADED HOME TO ENGLAND INSIDE THE PLANE....WAS A LONG LONG FLIGHT BACK, ALWAYS WORSE GOING TOWARD ENGLAND!!! AFTER A LONG NIGHT, THERE'S THE SUNRISE!!!! THE PLANE STARTING TO GO DOWN...... GOING DOWN THRU THE CLOUDS....... THERE'S ENGLAND!!!

When we got up and out of the room, we had a delicious breakfast at IHOP (International House of Pancakes). Mmmmm was that good! I wish we had gone back there again! I had French Toast stuffed with cream cheese and topped with wonderful strawberries and strawberry sauce. Makes my mouth water now just to think of it!!! MMMmmmm!!! Ken had a typical country breakfast which he enjoyed. (Oh! Ken got me a pair of pretty earrings in the IHOP shop, couldn't forget that part! LOL) After we finished there, we looked around Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede a little bit and got tickets for that night. Then we headed across The Great Smoky Mountains. It was a gorgeous day again and a breathtaking drive. Took lots of photos there too! We got back just in time to freshen up a little and get to The Dixie Stampede's Show. Supper was delicious there!!! They served a wonderful whole chicken, corn on the cob, half a baked potato and a roll, then for dessert an apple turnover. A yummy meal!!! Was one of the best baked chickens I've ever had, seasoned so well!!! We enjoyed the show too - it was the Rebels vs. the Yanks - was a fun show! Me being a Rebel, Ken had to root for the southerners (Rebels). LOL Sunday 30 September 2007: Sunday morning we slept a bit later too and didn't rush.
